Choosing The Sex Of Your Baby.

The Shettle's Method

By Costly Oma.

Baby smiling in bed in a white wrap

This post is all about having the knowledge that will enable us to choose the sex of our babies. That is, having the knowledge to choose whether as couples, we want to have a male child or we want to have a female child at any time that we want to add a child to the family.

This method of course is Shettle's method of choosing the sex of our babies. It is called the Shettle's method because the method was named after the person who invented it Landrum B. Shettles in the 1960s. This Shettle's method was published in the book How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby, coauthored by Shettles and David Rorvik. The book How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby was first published in 1971 and has been in print in various editions ever since.

Although this method has been said to not have strong scientific proof, people who have followed the method have testified to have been able to choose the sex of the baby they want to have and they said that by following the various methods outlined in the book, they have been able to choose to have either a boy or a girl child.

To keep this brief, to be able to choose the sex of the baby you want at any time, we should know the following:

  1. Know the counting of your menstrual cycle
  2. Know the procedure for choosing a male child.
  3. Know the procedure for choosing a female child.

Knowing Your Menstrual Cycle

For someone to be said to know their menstrual cycle, the person should be able to answer these five basic questions below. If you can answer these five questions then you can be said to know your menstrual cycle. So as a test, let's see how comfortable you are with the answers to the following questions.

  1. How many days does your menstrual cycle contain?
  2. Can you tell your supposed ovulation dates in your menstrual cycles?
  3. Can you tell your supposed ovulation periods in your menstrual cycles?
  4. Can you tell your supposed unsafe periods in your menstrual cycles?
  5. Can you tell your supposed safe periods in your menstrual cycles?
If you comfortably answered the above questions then you can skip to the various procedures for choosing either a male child or a female child but if you were not really comfortable getting the answers to the above questions, then continue reading down to learn how to keep the right counting of your menstrual cycle.

Definition Of Menstrual Cycle Terminologies
Before we get to how to know the right counting of your menstrual cycle, let's look at the various definitions of the terms mentioned in the five basic questions.

Days Your Menstrual Cycle Contains
This is the total number of days from day one that you start seeing blood in one cycle to the day before you start seeing blood again for the next cycle. Let's see the following examples.

A 26 day Menstrual cycle calendar example.

The above picture shows a calendar for September 2021. In this calendar, it is assumed that this person marks the beginning of her period on the calendar with a red colour and looking at the calendar, this person's flow started on the 2nd of September 2021 and started again on the 28th of the same September 2021.

The date the flow starts is referred to as day one of that menstrual cycle and the date before the next flow starts is referred to as the last day of that menstrual cycle. This indicates that looking at the calendar above, the 2nd of September of 2021 is the day one of this particular menstrual cycle and the 27th of the same month of September 2021 is the last day of this menstrual cycle as the 28th of this same month of September marks the beginning of the next menstrual cycle as it indicates the day that the next menstrual flow started.

Going by the above explanation, we can say that the number of days contained in this menstrual cycle is 26 days reason be that, when you count the number of days from the 2nd of September which is the day one of this menstrual cycle to the 27th of September which is the last day of this menstrual cycle, you would have counted 26 days.

So knowing the number of days contained in your menstrual cycle, the counting of the days is made from the first day of the flow to the day before the next flow starts.

If this is clear enough, we can move to the next one but if it's not, you can always drop a comment as to which area you still find unclear. Let's take a look at the second, Ovulation Date.

26 Days Menstrual Cycle

Ovulation Date
Ovulation Date is the date in one's menstrual cycle that the ovary discharges ova or ovules from itself. To know one's ovulation date in any menstrual cycle, it is said that it is best to count backwards.

The Ovulation Date of any menstrual cycle is gotten from counting 15 days backwards from the supposed last day of that cycle or the total number of days of the cycle minus 14 days.

That is, for this 26 days cycle, this would be 26 - 14 = 12. Meaning that the ovulation day of this 26-day menstrual cycle would fall on the 12-day count of the cycle as indicated in the calendar below.

This is so because it has been stipulated that a new menstrual cycle starts after 14 days that ovulation starts. This means that 14 days after the ovulation date, a new menstrual cycle starts. That is, the person in question starts seeing her period marking the beginning of a new menstrual cycle.

To illustrate this, let's take a look at the Ovulation mark in the Calendar of a 26-day cycle already established above.

The ovulation day of a 26 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

Looking at this calendar, the 27th of September is the last day of this cycle as established in the Days Your Menstrual Cycle Contains section since a new cycle started on the 28th of September.

Counting 15 days backwards from the 27th, you'll see that the 15th day backwards, fall on the 13th of September which is day 12 of the cycle. This day coloured green is the ovulation date of this cycle. Don't forget that we have already established that this is a 26-day cycle as it spans from the 2nd of September being day one of this cycle to the 27th of September being the last day of this cycle.

Ovulation Period
The ovulation period can be said to be the possible date that the ovary is likely to discharge ova or ovules from itself. The ovulation period of any given cycle is usually taken from a day before the Ovulation Date to a day after the Ovulation Date. Looking at the above Calendar illustration, the day before the 13th of September which is the Ovulation date is the 12th of September and the day after the 13th of September is the 14th of September.

Below is a calendar illustration that shows the ovulation period of this cycle. Looking at the calendar below, the ovulation period spans through the 12th, 13th and 14th of September which is days 11, 12 and 13 of this 26 days menstrual cycle. This means that ovulation may likely occur on any of those days mentioned. Let's not forget that the ovulation period is the date in the cycle that ovulation may likely occur.

The ovulation period of a 26 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

Unsafe Period
The Unsafe period of any menstrual cycle is the dates in that menstrual cycle that pregnancy may likely happen when intercourse is made on those days without applying any valid protection or prevention measures.

The unsafe period of any menstrual cycle is gotten based on the knowledge we have on how many days a male sperm cell lasts in the female after ejaculation and how many days an ovum lasts in the female after secretion by the ovary. See What Determines The Unsafe Period Of The Menstrual Cycle.

Based on the above knowledge, we carve out the unsafe period of any menstrual cycle by counting 6 days backwards from the earliest date of the ovulation period and about 3 days forward from the latest date of the ovulation period to be on the safe side.

The earliest date of the ovulation period for this menstrual cycle we are presently considering falls on the 12th of September and counting 6 days backwards from the 12th excluding the 12th would fall on 6th of September.

The latest date of the ovulation period of this cycle in consideration falls on the 14th of September and counting 3 days forward from the 14th excluding the 14th would fall on the 17th of September.

Going by our counting, we can say that the unsafe period of this menstrual cycle spans from the 6th of September to the 17th of September as shown in the picture below.

The unsafe period of a 26 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

From the picture shown above, the unsafe period covers the dates with the yellow fill and all the dates in between.

When we count the total number of days from the 6th of September to the 17th of September, we would have counted 12-days.

This is so because we need to give ourselves a level of tolerance just in case we experience ovulation a day earlier or a day later from the predicted ovulation day. This further gives the counting of our unsafe period an added assurance level of precaution in case we want to have intercourse in the safe zone with minimal fear of it encroaching into the unsafe zone.

Safe Period
The Safe Period of any menstrual cycle is the dates in that cycle that pregnancy may likely not occur when intercourse is made on those days. Meaning, these are the dates in a menstrual cycle that one is free to have intercourse and pregnancy may not occur.

From the Calendar we have above, all the dates with blue fill are the safe dates of this menstrual cycle. This also means that the safe period of any menstrual cycle is every other day except the unsafe period days or dates.

For questions and more clarity, pleases make use of the comment section below. Let's look at a 28 days cycle before we wrap this section up.

A 28 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

From the picture above, from the first red fill colour to the last blue fill colour before the next red fill colour is one cycle. This shows that from September 2nd to September 29th is one cycle. The count of the days is 28.

The Calendar of The Ovulation Date of a 28 Days Menstrual Cycle

The ovulation date of a 28 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

The green fill colour marks the ovulation day. This falls on day 14 of the cycle and it is on the 15th of September for this particular cycle. 28 - 14 = 14. Counting 15 days backwards from the last day of the cycle which is on the 29th of September still falls on the 15th of September which is on day 14 of the cycle.

The Calendar of The Ovulation Period of a 28 Days Menstrual Cycle.

The ovulation period of a 28 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

One day before and after the ovulation day span day 13 to day 15 of the menstrual cycle which falls on the 14th of September to the 16th of September as indicated with the light-green fill colour.

The Calendar of The Unsafe Period of a 28 Days Menstrual Cycle.

The unsafe period of a 28 day Menstrual cycle calendar example

The unsafe period of this cycle is shown with the yellow fill colours. Counting 6 days backwards from the earliest ovulation period and counting 3 days forward from the latest ovulation period shows an unsafe period from day 7 of the menstrual cycle to day 18 of the menstrual cycle. These days fall from the 8th of September to the 19th of September.

The 30th of September marks the beginning (day 01) of the next menstrual cycle count.

The Procedure For Choosing A Male Child.

1. Intercourse should be timed as close to the moment of ovulation as possible

2. The environment of the Vagina: Intercourse should be immediately preceded on each occasion by a BAKING SODA DOUCHE, consisting of two tablespoonfuls of baking soda, to a quart of water (an equivalent of one tablespoonful to half a litre of water). The solution should be permitted to stand for 15 minutes before use. This allows the soda to be completely dissolved.

3. Orgasm: Female orgasm is not necessary but desirable. If a woman normally has an orgasm, her husband should time his to coincide with hers or let her experience orgasm first.

4. Penetration: Deep penetration at the time of male orgasm is required. This will ensure the deposition of the sperm close to the cervix.

5. Sex Position: Vagina penetration from the rear is the recommended position. It helps ensure the deposition of the sperm at the entrance of the womb.

6. Sperm Quantity: Prior abstinence is necessary from the beginning of the monthly cycle until after the day of ovulation.

For questions and more clarity, pleases make use of the comment section below.

The Procedure For Choosing A Female Child.

1. Timing: Intercourse should cease two or three days before ovulation.

2. The environment of the vagina: Intercourse should be immediately preceded on each occasion by acidic douche consisting of two tablespoonfuls of white vinegar to a quart of water.

3. Orgasm: if the wife normally has an orgasm, she should try to avoid it.

4. Penetration: Shallow penetration by the male at the time of ejaculation is recommended.

5. Sex Position: The face to face or “missionary” position should be assumed during intercourse.

6. Abstinence: No abstinence from intercourse is necessary from the time after menstruation until after the final intercourse which is two to three days before the ovulation day.

NYSC SCHEME - Poem

By Costly Oma .  Written In 2013.  First Published: Feb. 2014. 1.  An idea was birthed,  And into action, it sprung. Since from Nineteen Seventy-Three, Youths have been shuffled. 2. With a call, we moved A call to serve, our best to render, A call to give, our best to offer. A call to keep one Nigeria 3. Under the sun, we matched. In the rain, no difference. When it’s bright and clear, And otherwise, we answer. 4. A call like no other, Beginning with a journey, Then living three weeks in exclusion, Learning new things in new style. 5. A call so anticipated, Becomes so tiring with time, Then feels it should be extended but boring, Yet memories linger. 6. With the hope of National unity, It was birthed.  I hope that its cause has not been tilted, For sacrifices have been made. 7. My Death-Feelings So Far – Part 1

By Costly Oma . My Death Encounter Part - 1. ~~My Body Leaving My Body~~ Sometime in the first quarter of the year 2018, around 4 AM in the morning, while I was still in bed, I was woken up by a strong presence of what I can call death. I felt this chilled cold sweep past me, from the soul of my feet to the crown of my head. It was so dramatic as I feel like the cold was swallowing me, starting from the soul of my feet to the crown of my head. As I got completely engulfed by the cold, I woke up. I woke up and got down from the bed but I was still seeing myself lying on the bed. I stood up but it felt like I wasn’t the one standing as I was seeing another me lying in bed. I was obviously at this point confused as to what was happening as I am both standing and lying down at the same time. As I was yet to get my mind organised as to what was happening, I saw a thick dark cloud forming at the westside wall of the room. This thick dark cloud looks so dirty and it smells so bad. As this cl

My Life Experiences And Quotes

By Costly Oma . Life has a way of Teaching, Taming and training humans. All of these life's teachings could be termed as Life's Experiences and everyone has had a measure of them. No two individuals have the same sets of life experiences in their entirety since no two people have been known to have been subjected to the same sets of living in all ramifications since our life's experiences are how we live based. I've got some of my life experiences compiled. I hope they give you something to think about as you go through them one after the other. Be Inspired - Story Of An Elephant and a Dog

An elephant and a dog became pregnant at the same time. Three months down the line the dog gave birth to six puppies. Six months later the dog was pregnant again, and nine months on it gave birth to another dozen puppies. The pattern continued. On the eighteenth month, the dog approached the elephant questioning, "Are you sure that you are pregnant? We became pregnant on the same date, I have given birth three times to a dozen puppies and they are now grown to become big dogs, yet you are still pregnant. What's going on?" The elephant replied, "There is something I want you to understand. What I am carrying is not a puppy but an elephant. I only give birth to one in two years. When my baby hits the ground, the earth feels it. When my baby crosses the road, human beings stop and watch in admiration, what I carry draws attention. So what I'm carrying is mighty and great."
